Above The Knee Amputee
Above The Knee Amputee

Does a disabled-with-disabled marriage work?
What do you guys think about a disabled guy marrying a disabled girl? Both are above knee amputees but generally are quite independent and productive members of this society. I mean both are well educated, have good paying jobs, have a car, a house and so on...Another point I'd like to highlight is, their disabilities do not "complement each other". This is what everyone seems to think when asked for an opinion, that one's weakness should be the other's strong point and vice-versa. Although this might be true regarding some kinds of disabilities, I think in the case I'm asking, there is no real need for this complementary nature. I could be wrong too. Just looking for opinions...
I don’t see why it wouldn’t work. Nothing that you mentioned indicates that their disabilities (or the fact that they have the same kind of disability) would affect their relationship in a negative way. There is not always real need for this complementary nature that you speak of. I know many marriages that work just fine without it.
My husband and I both have disabilities and we’ve been married for 7 years. I see nothing wrong with other people having disabled-with-disabled relationships.
Too Heavy to Exercise? Lose Weight Using a GlideCycle
Many people who are overweight would like to lose some pounds and they all know that exercise combined with diet is the best way to do that. But what kind of exercise could they do, when the mere act of walking makes them feel pain? Isn’t walking supposed to be the simplest type of exercise one can do?
Yes, it is difficult for overweight people to exercise. This is not just a subjective view, it is a fact. And regular exercise, designed for fit people, is not only difficult for heavy persons, but it can even be dangerous. The heavier you are, the greater the stress on your joints when you jump, jog, or just walk, so it is easy to see why high impact exercise is not only difficult for overweight people, but also dangerous. Exercise designed for overweight people must minimize joint stress, ligament, tendon and muscle strains, and also avoid dangerously elevated heart rates.
Taking all these limitations into account one may wonder if there is exercise that is appropriate and accessible for overweight persons. Actually, many overweight people have given up looking for a form of exercise that fits their needs because of all the difficulties involved.
The GlideCycle, a new low-impact trainer, is a great exerciser that can provide great workout and lots of fun for people with mobility limitations due to various causes, including obesity. The trainer is easy to use both outdoors (The GlideCycle or The GlidesDale for heavier or taller persons) or indoors (The Glide Track).
Holly, who is a 50-year-old above-knee amputee, has lost over 50 pounds after using the GlideCycle! She is no longer confined to a wheelchair. She can actually easily run 10 miles now using the GlideCycle! As she herself confesses, the GlideCycle has drastically changed her life, giving her back her health and hope.
Greg is another person who is happy to have found this trainer. He is 61 years old and weighs 367 lbs. He has recently started exercising using the GlideCycle and absolutely loves it! Here are a few phrases he said describing his experience:
“I have ridden bicycles, walked, been on treadmills, but I can tell you: this is the most exercise in such a short period of time. This is incredible! Really feels great! No pain in the knees, no pain in the joints… “ When asked what he would say to people who think they have got so heavy that they can’t exercise again, his response was: “I’d say forget about it! Get on one of these things and just do it! You’ll really be amazed how good you’ll feel!”

The advent of surgical amputation and its difficulties form a major part of the book, summarising the evolution of the control of haemorrhage and infection, pain relief, techniques, instrumentation, complications, prostheses, results and case histories. Alternative procedures, increasingly important in the last two centuries, are also debated. |
![]() Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics Sale Price: $189.00 Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours See Reviews For This Product DescriptionThe most outstanding feature of "Biomechanics of Lower Limb Prosthetics" is the demonstration of the practicality of biomechanics, when applied to lower limb prosthetics. Several original concepts are described, one of which, "rolling technology," has been implemented in prosthetic devices, while the principle of "reciprocal anti-resonance in locomotion" addresses future studies. A concept of anthropomorphicity presented by the author is a key tool in planning the design of an artificial limb or its components. Measurement procedures and equipment used in biomechanical laboratories are presented. The book demonstrates how the analysis of biomechanical data is a tool in the decision-making process of a prosthetic designer and clinician. The author shares his experience in the development of a protocol for biomechanics subject trials used in NIH-supported studies. |
