Is he telling the truth? How can you tell?

OK so my camp went to a baseball game and I was talking to this boy named Aaron, who I am not really friends with, but talk to. So anyway, my friend bought a foam finger so I took it and started waving it at him and here is our conversation:
Kelly: Would you like to be fanned by a hot mama?
Aaron: Uh, no...
Kelly: Regular mama?
Aaron: Nope.
Kelly: Are you suggesting I'm ugly?
Aaron: N- Yes.
later...
Kelly: Am I really ugly? (starts fake crying)
Aaron: Y- N- I don't know how to answer this question.
Kelly: (to friend) He thinks I'm hott!
Aaron: (looks fidgety and blushes and turns around facing game instead of me)

I'm confused. How can he confess you're ugly but also thinks that you are hot at the same time?

I guess he was telling the truth and you misunderstood what he was trying to say.
