Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Copyright (c) 2010 William McKenna

What is Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Carpal Tunnel syndrome (CTS) is a trapped nerve in the wrist area (Median nerve) causing associated symptoms of pain, weakness and numbness that can radiate from the wrist into the hand and arm. The carpal tunnel is the narrow passage of ligament and bone, that the nerves and ligaments of the hand pass through. Irritation, thickening or swelling in this area can cause pressure leading to CTS. The syndrome can be especially debilitating as over time can limit the use of the hand and cause high levels of pain in even slight movement of the hands.

Symptoms

Onset of symptoms can be gradual, with burning, tingling in the palm , thumb and index fingers. Sufferers may feel like their hand is swollen, even if no swelling is evident. Symptoms may begin at night, and may be enough to wake a person from sleep. As this progresses, the condition may worsen and be problematic during the day also, causing loss of function of the hand, difficulty in forming a fist or grasping, and even difficulty distinguishing hot or cold.

* Pain (radiating from wrist to hand and arm)
* Weakness
* Numbness
* Tingling in palm
* Loss of function
* Inability to sense hot & cold

What Causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome?

Despite the very specific and obvious symptoms of carpal tunnel symptom, which make it easy to diagnose, there can be many causes. Any disorder or problem that causes a restriction or pressure at the carpal tunnel can lead to it's symptoms. The following may cause CTS:

* Repetitive strain from overuse of hand- (i.e typing or use of mouse keys)
* Writer's cramp- (when writing for long periods take breaks to relieve tension in the wrist.)
* congenital predisposition (genetic)
* Sprain/trauma
* Arthritis
* Menopause
* Pregnancy- (increased weight gain and fluid retention in late pregnancy can cause CTS in some women.)
* Cyst or tumor- (some benign tumors, such as ganglion can press on the median nerve. Occasionally these need to be removed.)

Treatment

Orthodox treatment of Carpal tunnel, usually involves solely prescription analgesic (painkiller) drugs. This is often not enough, as it offers short term pain relief, although doesn't treat the underlying structural or root cause of the problem. Chiropractic treatments use gentle manipulation, massage and corrections of the wrist, arm and upper spine, to give pain relief in CTS, by directly effecting the tendons, bone structures and nerves involved. This method, increases circulation to the area, soothes the nerves and reduces inflammation, often giving permanent relief.

Surgery is another but not always the best option for CTS. Trying a Chiropractor is a non-evasive and safer approach.

"As a PSIA examiner I have worked with Kevin on and off the snow for several years. His creativity and knowledge of what works comes through clearly in The Illustrated Guide to Snowboarding. I'd recommend it as a reference to the professional instructor, as well as a how-to for the avid snowboarder and those who wish to be." -- J. Randy Price Member of the PSIA-AASI national demonstration team "As a professional athlete and instructor, working with Kevin and reading his book helped my riding immensely. One of Kevin's principles is straightforward and perfectly applicable for snowboarding, climbing or just about any sport--your mind leads and your body follows. It works!" -- Robyn Ebersfield 4-time World Cup rock climbing champion "Never in my thirty-three years of pioneering, shaping and defining the sport of snowboarding was there ever access to material explaining the technical aspects of riding in such an easy to understand manner. . . . This 'encyclopedia' of snowboarding how-to belongs on the shelf of every ski area, snowboard park and bookstore in the snowbelt." -- Paul Graves

"A master of those embarrassing, gloppy, painful, and suddenly wonderful things that happen on the razor's edge between childhood and full-fledged adolescence" (The Washington Post),  Newbery medalist Jerry Spinelli has penned his early autobiography with all the warmth, humor, and drama of his best-selling fiction. From first memories through high school, including first kiss, first punch, first trip to the principal's office, and first humiliating sports experience, this is not merely an account of a highly unusual childhood. Rather, like Spinelli's fiction, its appeal lies in the  accessibility and universality of his life. Entertaining and fast-paced, this is a highly readable memoir-- a must-have for Spinelli fans of all ages.

Description

The world has two faces. The natural and the supernatural. The face we see every day, people filing past us in an almost zombie-like stupor, numb to the horrors of everyday life or driven to madness by the pain and agony of modern-day existence. And those are the people who aren't zombies or monsters! Cal McDonald is a detective with one foot in the real world, and one in the world of magic. For Cal, the horrors we all dream about in the fevered darkness of the night are all too real, kept at bay through an almost constant influx of drugs to numb the pain, but never erase it. Cut from the same mold as Sam Spade, Jake Gittes, and the famous detectives of Chandler, Hammett, and Spillane, Cal McDonald, whether he likes it or not, is all that stands between us and the nightmare world just outside our vision.

Right now, Congress, the Fed, and the Treasury are all gambling with your future and your money. And it's contagious. Economies around the globe are suffering from the biggest multitrillion-dollar bets ever wagered on big governments and miraculous financial interventions in pretend "free markets."One man saw it all coming and told his readers well in advance of today's crisis. Bill Bonner reports on the true health and well-being of the world's largest economy to over half a million readers each day in The Daily Reckoning. His newsletter is to the mainstream financial press what the Gnostic Gospels are to the King James Bible.Back in 2000, Bill Bonner sounded like a prophet crying in the wilderness. While everyone scrambled to purchase shares of the latest and hottest dot-com, Bill announced his Trade of the Decade: Sell dollars, buy gold. Back in 2000, you could get an ounce for around $264. Today, you could pay as much as $1,400 for that same ounce. Finally, some of Bonner's best pronouncements, predictions, and profitable analysis are collected in one place.Dice Have No Memory gather's Bonner's richest insights from August 1999 through November 2010 to form a chronological narrative of economics in America.Here's a fraction of what you'll find inside:*Gold says "I Told You So"*Three out of Four Economists Are Wrong*Imperial Overstretch Marks*Why Debt Does Matter*Economic Zombies Shuffle Towards BankruptcyBonner's Dice Have No Memory offers elegies for economists, tips for investors, tirades against wasteful warfare past and present, and practical guides to modern finance with graceful prose, well-earned intelligence, and riotous irreverence. Bill Bonner's common sense genius rips the window dressing off modern finance - a world normally populated by misguided do-gooders, corrupt politicians, and big bankers empowered by dubious "mathematical" truths. The investing game is rigged, just like Monte Carlo.Instead of giving you magic formulas, this archcontrarian teaches you how to think clearly. And Dice Have No Memory gives today's investor the next moves he should make...before it's too late.
