How To Care For A Broken Toe

If you happen to break your toe, you should first see your doctor to insure that the injury can be healed at home and will not require toe surgery.

For the majority of broken toe injuries, a doctor will rarely cast the toe or even suggest a corrective surgery. However; this does not mean that the broken toe should not go untreated. If a toe is left untreated it can lead to chronic foot problems and possibly foot deformity.

There are some preparations you can take at home to help the healing process and make certain that the toe is fully restored to the normal condition. Immediately following the injury of either jamming the toe or actually breaking the toe, you should ice the toe for 15 minutes and then see your doctor right away if you notice any swelling or discoloration. Should you ignore your toe and not treat it or seek medical help, you increase the chances of re-injuring it more easily which means having to be more cautious about your daily activities.

If after getting a diagnosis of a broken toe from your doctor you will need to be off your feet for several hours a day. You may need to alternate your daily activities including your occupation requirements. For example if your job requires you to be on your feet a lot, you will need to find a way in which you can keep weight off the feet such as sitting on a stool or chair as much as possible.

You can heal the injury faster by elevating the foot when you return home from your work day. To elevate it you can use a few pillows, rolled up towels or anything else around the house that is soft and can help you raise your foot some.

The icing days are not over. You will still need to ice the foot a few times a day for about 15-20 minutes long each time.

The expected time for a toe to fully heal can be as long as 6 weeks long. Be very careful during this healing time to not re-injure it by avoiding wearing high heels or participating in strenuous exercise activities.
