Amputation is an acquired condition resulting in the loss of a limb, usually from an injury, illness or surgery. Congenital (present at birth) deficiency occurs when the baby is born without limbs or part of a limb. In the U.S., 82 percent of amputations are due to diseases vascular, 22 percent of trauma, 4 percent are congenital, and 4 percent are due to tumors. According to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), about 1.9 million people in the U.S. live with an amputation, with approximately 113,000 lower limb amputations performed each year.

The peripheral arterial disease (PAD) due to atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries) is the leading cause of amputation in people aged 50 years and represents up to 90 percent of amputations. PAD causes the blood vessels in the limbs that are damaged due to hardening of the arteries or diabetes. The cells within your body depends on a constant supply of oxygen and nutrients that they receive their blood. If your blood vessels are unable to supply blood and oxygen to the fingers or toes, cells and tissues die and are vulnerable to infection. If the blood supply can not be improved sufficiently or if the tissue can be recovered, the extensive tissue death may require amputation, especially if you are experiencing severe pain or infection.

An injury like an accident car or a severe burn can also destroy blood vessels and cause tissue death. If the infection is not treated properly, can spread through your body and threaten your life. The medical team will do everything possible to save the limb after surgical replacement or repair of blood vessels damaged or the use of donor tissue. If these measures do not work, amputation can save your life. Traumatic injuries are the most common cause of amputations in people under 50 years of age.

A doctor may recommend amputation if you have a cancerous tumor in his leg. Chemotherapy, radiation or other treatments can be used to destroy cancer cells. These treatments can reduce the tumor and may increase the effectiveness of amputation.
