A legacy Cambodia-i Want to Make My country safe for my people

The sight of children and adults walking the streets of Siem Reap was the missing members catalyst for making the suggestion to visit the Cambodian Mine Museum.

The museum is located on the main road leading out of Siem Reap and is a 15-20 minute ride by tuk tuk to the city.

It is estimated that up to 10 million mines were laid in the soil on the fields of Cambodia in the first place by the Khmer Rouge during their reign of terror and then Vietnam's invading army in their fight against the Khmer Rouge. This practice continued after Vietnamese troops withdrew from Cambodia, the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces using the same tactics against the remnants of the Khmer Rouge.

How many millions landmines are still on the ground about Cambodia? It is not possible to predict a number, but walking through the museums model garden settings with booby traps and mines cleared demonstrates the danger that still exists. Although visitors have said that the exhibits are there, few leave the garden without injury if the mines were still alive.

The inspiration behind the museum and its partners Relief Center Aki Ra. A former child soldier of the Khmer Rouge is his personal view, stated in a simple but powerful statement: "I want to make a safe country for my people." With most dependent Cambodian agriculture is manual labor of the dangers of unexploded landmines are a constant threat to the agricultural labor force.

Its mission is to educate museum visitors about landmines and unexploded ordnance. The museum has a large inventory to clear landmines and unexploded ordnance on the screen, and a large collection of military equipment found in different parts of the Cambodian countryside. One element is a 225kg bomb from a warplane U.S..

However, the museum is only part of Aki Ra's vision. The facility also supports a school and an orphanage for children who have survived landmine accidents, as well as provide a medical rehabilitation center for those members who require prostheses.

Another section has troops involved in demining activities living in the facility.

As the work of an NGO Aki Ra, with the support of Cambodian and international donors. These include UNESCO and the Canadian government.

It is ironic that a man who spent his first years of planting these weapons of destruction in Cambodia is now leading the way in landmine clearance.

But the question remains persistent "How many years will be to the innocent people of Cambodia are free of the effects of the mutilation of landmines?
