Do You Need Orthodics?

If you have been living with foot pain for some time, you’ve probably heard about the healing power of orthodics, but you might not know just what they are, or what they can do for you. Orthotics are inserted into your shoes to help prevent and treat common foot problems. These foot problems can cause severe pain, not only in the feet but also in the back of your neck. If you have serious foot or back pain, you may be wondering if orthotics are good option for you to consider.

Orthotics are designed to correct existing foot problems by properly aligning the bones and muscles of the foot, much like a corrective brace. When worn over a period of time, orthotics help to strengthen and realign malformations in the foot. People who are flat footed or who have arches that are too high need orthotics to help reduce foot pain and also to prevent future problems with their feet.

There are several different types of orthotics, but the primary terms you will come across in your orthotic research are, rigid, semi-rigid, and soft orthotics.

Rigid orthotics, like the name suggests are formed out of hard plastic or carbon fiber, and are used to control the motion in your foot. This helps to reduce pain as well as helping to reshape the foot.

Semi-rigid orthotics are used primarily by athletes.  They serve to promote balance and help support muscles, preventing strain. They are made from soft material that is reinforced by a rigid core.

Soft orthotics are used to relieve pressure and absorb shock. These are especially helpful for those who lack the fatty cushion on the bottoms of their feet and heels, and for those with diabetes.

Speak to your doctor about your foot pain to see if orthotics are a viable option to help you.
