The History of Fiber Reinforced Polymer
Fiber reinforced polymer, or FRP for short, is a recently developed material generally used for construction. According to popular belief, this versatile construction material was first used in the construction of a boat hull by using a foam mold during the 1930's. In 1940, FRP was primarily used in the construction of various FRP-based products such as aircraft and small water vessels belonging to the Air Force, Navy, and oil companies.
In 1950, an American institute completed the design for a house made entirely of FRP. Nicknamed "The House of the Future", it was constructed in Tomorrowland, a section in Disneyland. The house attracted a lot of people who became fascinated by its unique and futuristic look. The House of The Future was one of Disneyland's most popular attractions for an entire decade.
The House of the Future demonstrated the amazing durability of FRP when it was scheduled to be demolished in 1967. The demolition team swung a wrecking ball towards the house in order to break its walls. However, to their surprise, the wrecking ball simply bounced off the structure, barely scratching the futuristic house. The FRP home was too tough to break that it had to be dismantled manually.
Afterwards, automobile manufacturers started using fiber reinforced polymers in constructing vehicles, allowing the creation of sturdier car designs. After the failed demolition of the House of the Future, construction companies also incorporated fiberglass in various construction projects. By 1994, about 600 million metric tons of FRP have already been used both in construction and renovation of different buildings and other sorts of structures.
Today, many construction companies specialize in the production of fiber reinforced polymer. FRP is regularly used for construction of domes, highly-detailed sculptures, and even bridges and other kinds of support structures. Today, there are buildings with architectural designs that were once considered impossible to make before FRP was invented.
People also use fiber reinforced polymer products for sports gadgets as well as tools for daily living, such as fishing rods, skateboards, and even durable water flasks. Various weapon manufacturing companies use FRP for manufacturing gears such as riot shields and gun receivers, while Medical researchers have developed products such as durable prosthetic limbs and crutches.
