Do prosthetic teeth keep your natural teeth from 'shifting'?

I know once a tooth is extracted, it will cause other teeth to move around. If I have a back molar removed, and get a clip on tooth and wear it all day, will this be enough to prevent other teeth from shifting?

It should basically do the job.

The idea is that the other teeth can't fill the space if your pontic (fake tooth) is in the way. It works.

Except for the fact that the root of your tooth isn't there, and the teeth next to it can shift a little. This happened to me except in my front teeth a bit. If you want the space to be 100% conserved, you should ask about implants.

Also, those "clip-on-teeth" you mention arn't supposed to last forever. I've been wearing one (a retainer with a pontic) for allmost a year now, and let me tell you they are so annoying. Talk to your dentist about your tooth needs, and he will probably give you your options.

Good luck!

Ionic Teeth Whitening

Whitelight is a revolutionary ionic teeth-whitening system that uses light technology in order to speed up the tooth whitening process.

Laser teeth whitening is one of the latest advancements in teeth whitening technology with the Whitelight ionic teeth whitening system being a step on in that it allows you to use a light tooth whitening treatment in the comfort of your own home.

The ionic teeth whitening process enables you to remove surface and embedded stains caused by smoking, certain liquids and foods. The manufacturers of the ionic teeth whitening system state that the process will lift years of stains in just over 20 minutes and do not leave you with the problem of sensitive teeth.

The manufacturers state that the LED light assists in the deeper penetration of the tooth whitening gel, into the tooth. but there is no mention of the ionic teeth whitening system having any impact on the yellowing of the dentin inside your teeth which is a common reason for tooth discoloration. It is advisable that you seek professional advice as to the suitability of ionic teeth whitening in regard to the discoloration of your teeth.

Unlike professional chair based teeth whitening processes and some other home based whitening products there appears to be no reference made as to how many shades lighter your teeth will be as a result of ionic teeth whitening.

The process of whitening your teeth using the ionic teeth whitening system involves placing teeth whitening gel onto the surface of your teeth using a mouthpiece that fits securely over your teeth. The LED light is said to be harmless and is used for 2 minutes at a time to activate the silver ions which are contained in the tooth whitening gel.

It is stated that the silver ions, once activated, cause the bleaching agent to work faster and to penetrate deeper into the tooth.

As with other teeth whitening products, ionic teeth whitening will not have any impact on prosthetic teeth. Whitening your natural teeth, after having prosthetic teeth, such as crowns and veneers, fitted, could leave you with some very expensive cosmetic dentistry that no longer matches the colour of your natural teeth.

If you want to give it a go the WhiteLight ionic teeth whitening system costs around $30 and comes complete with a light (batteries included), tooth whitening gel, stay white spray, dental tray (mouthpiece) and mixing tip.

Description

The aim of dental treatment is to maintain the teeth and periodontium in a healthy condition, and to restore or replace teeth to achieve acceptable aesthetics, speech, and mastication. Dental treatment also aims to maintain the health of the entire stomatognathic system, i.e. temporomandibular joints, orofacial muscles and physiognomy, as a prerequisite for acceptable oral function. Aesthetical, social and psychological demands have to be satisfied as well. Factors other than merely mechanical aspects are involved in the maintenance and rehabilitation of oral function, and are important in mastication in 8 particular and in oral well-being in general. The prosthodontist has to take into account that these factors will determine the subjective need for prosthetic treatment, probably more than other objective criteria.

Single-tooth replacement will most likely comprise a larger percentage of prosthetic dentistry in the future, compared with past generations. Almost 30% of the 50 to 59 year olds examined in a random survey exhibited either single or multiple posterior edentulous spaces bordered by natural teeth. A lot of options are avialable for the dentist to replace the missing tooth, which may vary from patient to patient.
