![]() Artificial Parts, Practical Lives: Modern Histories of Prosthetics Sale Price: $23.00 Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours See Reviews For This Product DescriptionFrom the wooden teeth of George Washington to the Bly prosthesis, popular in the 1860s and boasting easy uniform motions of the limb, to today's lifelike approximations, prosthetic devices reveal the extent to which the evolution and design of technologies of the body are intertwined with both the practical and subjective needs of human beings. The peculiar history of prosthetic devices sheds light on the relationship between technological change and the civilizing process of modernity, and analyzes the concrete materials of prosthetics which carry with them ideologies of body, ideals, body politics, and culture. Simultaneously critiquing, historicizing, and theorizing prosthetics, Artificial Parts, Practical Lives lays out a balanced and complex picture of its subject, neither vilifying nor celebrating the merger of flesh and machine. |
![]() Prosthetic Memory: The Transformation of American Remembrance in the Age of Mass Culture Sale Price: $29.00 Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours See Reviews For This Product DescriptionInstead of compartmentalizing American experience, the technologies of mass culture make it possible for anyone, regardless of race, ethnicity, or gender to share collective memories -- to assimilate as personal experience historical events through which they themselves did not live. That's the provocative argument of this book, which examines the formation and potential of privately felt public memories. Alison Landsberg argues that mass cultural forms such as cinema and television in fact contain the still-unrealized potential for a progressive politics based on empathy for the historical experiences of others. The result is a new form of public cultural memory -- "prosthetic" memory -- that awakens the potential in American society for increased social responsibility and political alliances that transcend the essentialism and ethnic particularism of contemporary identity politics. |
![]() Prosthetic Gods (October Books) List Price: Sale Price: $19.80 You save: $2.20 (10%) Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours See Reviews For This Product DescriptionHow to imagine not only a new art or architecture but a new self or subject equal to them? In Prosthetic Gods, Hal Foster explores this question through the works and writings of such key modernists as Gauguin and Picasso, F. T. Marinetti and Wyndham Lewis, Adolf Loos and Max Ernst. These diverse figures were all fascinated by fictions of origin, either primordial and tribal or futuristic and technological. In this way, Foster argues, two forms came to dominate modernist art above all others: the primitive and the machine. Foster begins with the primitivist fantasies of Gauguin and Picasso, which he examines through the Freudian lens of the primal scene. He then turns to the purist obsessions of the Viennese architect Loos, who abhorred all things primitive. Next Foster considers the technophilic subjects propounded by the futurist Marinetti and the vorticist Lewis. These "new egos" are further contrasted with the "bachelor machines" proposed by the dadaist Ernst. Foster also explores extrapolations from the art of the mentally ill in the aesthetic models of Ernst, Paul Klee, and Jean Dubuffet, as well as manipulations of the female body in the surrealist photography of Brassai, Man Ray, and Hans Bellmer. Finally, he examines the impulse to dissolve the conventions of art altogether in the drip paintings of Jackson Pollock, the scatter pieces of Robert Morris, and the earthworks of Robert Smithson, and traces the evocation of lost objects of desire in sculptural work from Marcel Duchamp and Alberto Giacometti to Robert Gober. Although its title is drawn from Freud, Prosthetic Gods does not impose psychoanalytic theory on modernist art; rather, it sets the two into critical relation and scans the greater historical field that they share. |
![]() It's Just a Matter of Balance: A Very Personal Story Of Amputee Rehabilitation, An Autobiography, Prosthetic Education, Inspirational, Useful Story For Clinicians, And The Teenage Student List Price: Sale Price: $17.05 You save: $2.90 (15%) Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Usually ships in 24 hours See Reviews For This Product DescriptionRECOMMENDED READING BY: THE AMERICAN ACADEMY OF ORTHOTISTS AND PROSTHETISTS This is a true story written by an Amputee-Certified Prosthetist. He wrote down his story after 35 years of life, experiencing living his life as an amputee. The ordeal started when he was 16 years old. He had very, very little help with the adjustment or life changes that were forced upon him as he became an amputee. There was no support group available for him to attend, and he was never referred for psychological counseling at all. Kevin finds it most interesting and you may agree, that he actually wrote his book to help himself! Yes, he wished someone could have handed him this book and said, Read this son, it will help you!, at the time when he found himself having the saddest feeling that he had ever experienced before in his new life, as an amputee. His true story as he wrote it all down, chronicles his struggle with the unbelievable harshness that life can bring to us at times. In various editorial book reviews the book has been found to be very helpful to the professionals who provide care for people with disabilities, deepening their understanding of the disabled person and the disabled person s adjustment to life after disability occurs. |
