Willow
There are over 300 species of willows are found mainly in Europe and North America. Medically important species include Salix alba (willow white), S. nigra (black willow) and S. purpurea (purple willow), however, S. daphnoides and S. tragilis together with S. purpurea offer the best performance of the precursors of salicylate. Willow is the source of acetylsalicylic acid (aspirin) and, in fact, this drug known generically the name of your source herbals.
Uses and Benefits:
In ancient Greece, willow bark was used to gout and fever and painful disorders. In 1763 the Reverend Edward Stone in Oxfordshire reported on its value in the treatment of fevers. Subsequently, salicylic acid was prepared from salicin in willow bark, and finally, aspirin was first synthesized in 1853. Salicylic acid is also obtained from the meadowsweet, ulmaria Spira, aspirin was the name of this plant used for a variety of traditional indications in the past (such as gastritis, gonorrhea, and as an aphrodisiac and soothing) Willow bark is used primarily for the treatment of rheumatic diseases and is a common alternative to aspirin as an analgesic and antipyretic. Recently, Willow bark has been introduced in the preparations for weight loss.
Pharmacology:
Willow bark contains 1.5 to 11% phenolic glyco

You can view it with any web browser.Description: A field study was conducted at Little Topashaw Creek in northern Mississippi, aimed at expanding the limited database on the survivorship of Salix nigra (black willow) cuttings planted on riparian restoration sites. We tested the hypothesis that sediment moisture availability (deficit, excess) as mediated by sediment texture and depth to the prevailing water table is a major factor governing black willow survival during the initial stage of establishment following transplanting. Replicated plots were established across elevational gradients and a range of soil texture. Each plot contained 16 planted cuttings (2.5cm diameterx2.5m length). Plot depth to water table, soil texture, and soil redox potential were measured. Plant gas exchange, leaf chlorophyll content, growth, and survival were monitored periodically over two growing seasons. Survival was best at low elevation compared to cuttings planted at mid- and high elevations. Poor survival and growth were noted for cuttings that encountered sediment moisture deficits in plots with coarse texture while the best cutting survival was recorded for intermediate sand content plots. Results indicated that plot location on the bank and soil texture are two important factors that influence riverbank restoration success. Therefore, any riparian restoration plan should include careful assessment of these factors prior to undertaking such efforts. |

Excerpt: About 400.See List of Salix species Willows, sallows, and osiers form the genus Salix, around 400 species of deciduous trees and shrubs, found primarily on moist soils in cold and temperate regions of the Northern Hemisphere. Most species are known as willow, but some narrow-leaved shrub species are called osier, and some broader-leaved species are referred to as sallow (derived from the Latin word salix, willow). Some willows (particularly arctic and alpine species) are low-growing or creeping shrubs; for...More: http://booksllc.net/?id=91983 |
![]() Controlling Phalaris arundinacea (reed canarygrass) with live willow stakes: A density-dependent response [An article from: Ecological Engineering] Sale Price: $10.95 Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Available for download now See Reviews For This Product DescriptionThis digital document is a journal article from Ecological Engineering, published by Elsevier in 2006. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.Description: We tested the use of live willow stakes to manage reed canarygrass (Phalaris arundinacea L.) invasions on a wetland site. We planted willow at densities of 0.60m (2ft) centers, 0.91m (3ft) centers, 1.21m (4ft) centers, and control (no plantings) on a sloping wetland edge at Lake Washington, Seattle, U.S.A., where reed canarygrass dominated prior to the experiment. Soil moisture content was measured along the slope gradient, resulting in three soil moisture classes per replicate. Willow leaf area index and reed canarygrass aboveground biomass were measured after each of two consecutive growing seasons and analyzed using ANCOVA. Relative to the controls, the willows reduced total biomass of reed canarygrass by 44.9% with 0.60m spacing in the first year and by 68.0% with 0.60m spacing and 56.1% with 0.91m spacing in the second year. Differences in soil moisture did not affect reed canarygrass aboveground biomass or effects of willow on reed canarygrass, but did affect willow growth, perhaps through reed canarygrass competition under lower soil moisture conditions. We recommend the 0.60 and 0.91m spacings for wetland restoration projects attempting to manage reed canarygrass through live willow staking. |
![]() An economic analysis of leachate purification through willow-coppice vegetation filters [An article from: Bioresource Technology] Sale Price: $8.95 Eligible for free shipping!Availability: Available for download now See Reviews For This Product DescriptionThis digital document is a journal article from Bioresource Technology, published by Elsevier in 2004. The article is delivered in HTML format and is available in your Amazon.com Media Library immediately after purchase. You can view it with any web browser.Description: In this study an economic analysis of the purification of integrated solid waste treatment facility leachates through a willow-coppice (Salix) vegetation filter in southern Sweden was carried out. Calculations were based on the use of two computer models that were initially used in estimating a pump-and-pipe irrigation system for a 36-ha willow-coppice plantation to purify an average annual quantity of 195,000 m^3 of leachate with an average nitrogen content of 24 g/m^3. Results showed that facility leachates could be purified at US$0.34/m^3 compared with US$0.62/m^3 for that of conventional leachate treatment at a wastewater treatment plant. Furthermore, results revealed that the increased income from willow growing and sale of the biomass chips represented only a small factor in the overall cost of the purification technique--decreasing purification costs to US$0.326/m^3. Sensitivity analyses also demonstrated that, because of the large leachate holding pond expense, only a fraction of facility leachate should be treated through a vegetation filter. |
