MCV blood test is part of a complete blood count (CBC). MCV stands for "mean corpuscular volume" or MCV. It is a measure the average size of red blood cells (RBC), also called erythrocytes. Knowing your MCV is important to ensure that it is in good health. Also is a good way to find out if you have a disease that can still be asymptomatic. Asymptomatic means we still do not feel any symptoms.
A CBC is performed by extracting blood from a vein, usually in its upper end, in the elbow area. Blood is drawn through a syringe. It could also be drawn by fingerprick or heelprick. Fingerprick is generally used for infants and toddlers, while heelprick is for newborn babies. Once the blood sample is sent to the laboratory for analysis.
VCM is measured in fL or femtoliters. The normal value is between 80 and 100 fL, although the normal range can vary slightly among different laboratories. MCV is increased if their red blood cells are macrocytic. This means they are larger than normal size. If your blood cells are microcytic, the MCV is below normal value. Means microcytic red blood cells are smaller than normal size.
Red blood cells play a critical role in the body. The main function of red blood cells carry hemoglobin. Hemoglobin carries oxygen from the lungs to the tissues around the body. They also help the red blood cell carbon dioxide excreted from the body. These cells bring carbon dioxide tissues to the lungs, where it can be expelled.
MCV is elevated in conditions such as hemolytic anemia, pernicious anemia and anemia caused by deficiency vitamin B12 and folic acid. MCV also may be elevated in people who are heavy consumers of alcohol. VCM is below the normal range of people who suffer thalassemia, chronic disease or iron deficiency anemia. For patients with blood in the stool, a low MCV value could indicate a possible cancer of the gastrointestinal system.
